Once Saved Always Saved Is Biblical

ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Is once saved always saved a Biblical doctrine?" ChristiaNet president, Bill Cooper, responded, "Christ alone saves all those who believe and follow Him."

Out of 700 Christians surveyed about half, 49%, believed that once a Christian is saved, he will always be saved. This group of people were assured of God's love and knew that God would not lie to them, "The Bible says nothing can separate us from the love of God." They also knew that Christ died to save each person, "Christ died only once and saves all who believe in Him." Multiple Bible verses were quoted, but the most popular one was John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Thirty-eight percent, a close runner up, felt that Christians could in fact lose their salvation because they have been given the freedom to choose, "We all have a choice. We can choose to denounce God and not follow Him anymore, then we will lose our salvation." Many believed that they were only saved as long as they lived a Christian life and repented of their sins frequently, "It is not a doctrine, it was interpreted wrong by man. As long as I live a good life and repent, I'll be saved." Still others in this group quoted Luke 9:62, "And Jesus said unto him, no man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God."

Only thirteen percent were unsure. Mainly because of the confusion in conflicting passages of scripture, "I see Bible verses on both sides and I am confused." Others were unsure because they felt some people were never really saved to begin with, "You may not have been truly saved in the beginning." Still, some felt that if a Christian turned His back on God, they would lose salvation, "If you knowingly disobey, you won't be saved. God will never forsake you but you can forsake Him."
