Debt Consolidation Is Acceptable For Christians
ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Should Christians use debt consolidation services?" ChristiaNet's president, Bill Cooper, stated, "All Christians are called upon to be good financial stewards."
Out of 1,100 people surveyed, 57% believed that is was acceptable for Christians to utilize the services of a debt consolidation firm. Many felt that it was acceptable because, "It is important for Christians to pay all their financial obligations; sometimes they just need a little help." Others in this category felt that, "It is better to pay the debt than to not pay it all." Some survey takers felt that consolidating debt was a much better idea than the other legal alternatives, "It is a wonderful alternative to bankruptcy. Negotiating a lower interest rate is the main way debt consolidation services work. This will help to reduce the amount of money due and make the debt more manageable."
Twenty-eight percent of poll takers were unsure about whether or not they felt that Christians should participate in debt consolidation services. Some said that they, "didn't know how those programs worked." Others said it was allowable only if, "the organization includes a financial management program to ensure that the person doesn't get into problems again." One person who was unsure said, "Only for those who are in a desperate situation and their only alternative is to not pay the money owed, but if there is a way to pay the debt in its entirety, a Christian should do so."
Only fifteen percent of Christians surveyed did not feel that it was appropriate for a believer to utilize these types of services. They made comments such as, "Christians should not have gotten themselves into that much trouble in the first place," and "They must suffer the consequences of their actions, then maybe they will learn a lesson about spending money that is not theirs." Others in this category felt very strongly on the issue, stating, "To eliminate or lower legitimate debts is the same as stealing."
To help educate Christians, ChristiaNet has just released a series of debt consolidation articles. These articles are designed to assist Christians in their quest for concise, easy-to-understand information.
