Tithing Causes Financial Blessings
ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, Must Christians tithe to be blessed by God? President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, stated, "While there are mixed viewpoints, most Christians believe giving 10% of one's income is essential."
Out of nearly 1,400 Christians surveyed, 55% felt that tithing is an act of obedience which God blesses. One respondent said, Malachi 3:10 says, 'Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.' Another in this group felt that tithing is a matter of trust, God doesn't need our money. He wants to give us a chance to put our trust in Him. If we have a little money, but still give 10% back to Him, it shows how much we really trust Him."
Thirty-five percent of pollers felt that tithing was under Old Testament law and does not apply to Christians today. One poller said, "Abraham gave a tenth and was blessed. Tithing was mandatory for Israel by law; but we are now free from the curse of the law. Jesus said, 'Give, and you will be blessed.' So we don't have to tithe, but we must give in order to be blessed." Another believer remarked, I say, "No," to financial tithing alone. "I give more than 10% of my time and love to the homeless and less fortunate, as Jesus tells us to do. That's tithing."
Ten percent, or a tithe of believers polled were unsure about whether Christians must give 10% of their earnings in order to be blessed. One respondent said, "The sun rises and sets on the just and unjust. I tithe and receive blessings, but I also know that some people don't tithe and they receive blessings as well." Another poller remarked, "There is so much controversy on tithing that it is hard to understand the difference between the Old and New Testament do's and don'ts."
