Can God Heal Someone With Depression?

ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Can God heal someone with depression?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper said, "An overwhelming majority of Christians surveyed felt that God can heal depression."

With nearly 1,500 Christians responding to the survey, 94% felt that God could heal depression. The idea that all things are possible with God seemed to be a recurring theme. "Jesus was bruised for our iniquities and by His stripes we are healed," said one Christian. "Depression is an illness and God still does heal illnesses as well as forgives sin and iniquity." Another responder explained "that there are times when God uses medical science to heal: God can heal anything He chooses. Sometimes He chooses to heal with medication and sometimes without." One Christian spoke from personal experience: "God healed me after suffering from severe clinical depression for twenty years! He is more powerful than any disease! Just never give up praying!"

Four percent of responders said that they were unsure about whether or not God could heal depression. "God can do anything, but I know depression is a very difficult thing to overcome and I am not sure if one can ever do that completely," said one Christian. Some responders seemed to be seeking such healing themselves, but were struggling to find an answer. "I have had depression for many years and always believed God would heal me. He didn't, at least not outright. But I did finally go to the doctor and got on medication and for the most part my depression is gone. So I guess He used the medication to help me."

Only two percent of Christians surveyed felt that God could not heal depression. Of this small percentage, many responders felt that God could help alleviate depression, but could not completely heal it. "Clinical depression can greatly be aided by strong faith in a higher being but needs medical intervention," was one Christian's opinion. Another responder did not believe that healing depression was a priority for God: "God's main purpose is to save the sinners."
