Must The Saturday Sabbath Be Followed?
ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Must the Saturday Sabbath be followed?" "A majority of responders believe that Christians should observe the Saturday Sabbath," said Bill Cooper, president of ChristiaNet.
With over 1,400 Christians responding to the survey, 52% said that they believe that Christians must follow the Saturday Sabbath. "God blessed the seventh day and sanctified that time period, this is part of a loving God," explained one responder. Another Christian took issue with the change from Saturday to Sunday: "God has not changed it to Sunday. It was man who changed the day." Another responder gave this reasoning: "That's the day God rested after creation." "Jesus kept it and He is our example in all things...God's law never changes and the Sabbath was given in Creation and will be kept in Heaven," stated another Christian.
Thirty-five percent of Christians surveyed believe Christians do not need to follow the Saturday Sabbath. "According to the New Testament, we are to set aside time to worship the Lord but this does not have to be on Saturday," said one Christian. "God said keep the sabbath holy, not keep 'Saturday' holy," agreed another responder. "Christ said that the sabbath was made for man, and man not made for the sabbath," one Christian explained, adding: "Christians generally worship on Sunday because the Bible states or implies very strongly that Christ arose on the first day of the week." Another Christian stated: "I believe every day should be lived for God."
Thirteen percent of Christians said that they were unsure about whether or not Christians were required to observe the Sabbath on Saturdays. "Saturday or Sunday are not the issue, a 'Sabbath rest' is," explained one responder. "To me, the most important thing is to serve God Almighty and follow His injunction that we should not forsake the gathering of believers," stated another Christian, adding: "Whether the fellowship is held on a Saturday or otherwise does not make any meaning to me."
