Was Jesus Christ Sinless?
ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Was Jesus Christ sinless?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, said, "As you read the Word of God, you begin to understand God's plan and how Jesus Christ must be sinless for God to complete the work on the cross."
With over 1,700 Christians responding to the survey, 94% felt that Jesus Christ was 100 percent sinless. Responders suggested that the Bible is completely clear on this topic. Many quoted scriptures from the books of Hebrews, Second Corinthians, First John and First Peter. "He is the Lamb of God who is without blemish," said one responder. "If He were a sinner, then there is no salvation," another responder explained. Others believed that since Jesus was God and God can not sin then Jesus could not sin, yet He was tempted in all things. While some used the argument that since Jesus was born of a virgin and the Holy Spirit that the sin nature was not passed on to Him.
Three percent of Christians surveyed thought Jesus had committed at least one sin. Many speak from their own experiences giving examples as children or teenagers and drawing the conclusion that since Jesus was part man that He must have sinned once. Others used the cursing of the fig tree or over turning the tables in the temple as examples of rage. Finally, some took the question literally and applied it to the moments before Jesus' death when God laid all the sins of the world upon Jesus.
Three percent of Christians surveyed were unsure as to Jesus being sinless or not. Many responders in this group speculated on Jesus' development as child by giving the example of Jesus leaving His mother without telling her to teach in the Temple. Another responder went on to say: "Jesus was both human and divine. He must have sinned at some point because temptation is everywhere." 2 Corinthians 5:21 clear states that Jesus never sinned, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
