Is Heaven An Actual Place?

ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Is Heaven an actual place?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, stated, "The vast majority of Christians polled believe Heaven is a place they will go to someday."

Out of nearly 1,200 Christians surveyed, 94% believed that Heaven is an actual place. Reasons to support this belief include, "In the beginning of the Bible God tells us He created the heavens and the earth," and "The Book of Revelation describes Heaven as being a large city with streets of gold." By far the most popular response was the verse John 14:2-3 where Jesus told His disciples, "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." A few pollers based their answer upon their personal near death experiences where they believed they saw Heaven as a bright light. While many others simply accept Heaven as an actual place because they know that is where God lives.

Three percent of survey takers did not believed that Heaven is an actual place. Most in this group were extremely confident that Heaven is not a literal or physical location, but rather a state of mind or a dimensional realm where spirits exist. One poller said, "It can't be a place because God is spirit." Another stated, "To me, Heaven is 'in the presence of God' whereas, Hell is 'absent from God.'"

Three percent of those surveyed were unsure about whether or not they believed Heaven to be an actual location. One unsure survey taker said, "The Bible clearly professes Heaven and Hell, but I don't know about a literal place that has streets of gold." Another unsure poller stated, "I believe it's a state of mind." One thing all groups agreed upon is that Heaven will be much better than anything this world can offer.
