Tithing Is A New Testament Teaching, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Is tithing a Biblical New Testament teaching?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, stated, "The Bible is clear that Christian's should give with a cheerful heart."

Out of 1,900 Christians surveyed, 66% believed that tithing was Biblical in New Testament teachings. Many quoted 1 Corinthians 16:2 which states, "Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come." This verse confirmed that tithing was in fact applicable today. Another reason stated was that the Bible talks of giving the first fruits or ten percent back to God, "We should tithe 10%, it says so in the Bible." Another Bible verse was quoted by those who supported New Testament tithing. Malachi 3:10, "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse."

Twenty-two percent of the participants did not believe that giving was required. A popular reason was that Christian's are now living under the grace of God and not the law, "Because we are not under the curse of the law anymore." They also felt that Christians were not required to give ten percent, and that all are encouraged to give, but they are not bound by rules in their giving, "The Bible only says that we should give cheerfully, that can be one dollar or one hundred." Most in this group, however, believed the tithe was for Old Testament times only and was not applicable today, "I have never seen a tithe mentioned in the New Testament."

Only twelve percent of those surveyed were unsure. Some of the reasons for the uncertainty included not understanding the meaning of the word, "What is a tithe anyway"; "I haven't learned much about this subject, but I think it includes anything of value, not just money"; and understanding it to be a recommended amount, not a mandatory one, "Giving ten percent is a good amount, God suggested it, but you can give anything you want."
