Christians Consider Drinking Beer Acceptable
ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Is it wrong for a Christian to consume beer?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, responds, "Christ warns of the results of drunkenness."
Out of 5,200 Christians surveyed, 51% do not feel that drinking beer is wrong. In fact, many people in this group did not feel that drinking any alcohol was wrong, "Drinking a little bit is not wrong, but drunkenness is." They believed that everything, including alcohol, should be in moderation, "One beer never hurt anyone, if you lose control and overindulge then you are wrong." One survey taker even responded, "If drinking a little bit is wrong, then why did Jesus drink wine?"
Thirty-eight percent of those surveyed did, in fact, feel that drinking beer was wrong. They felt that one beer almost always leads to more and then can also lead to alcoholism, "I don't know anyone that only drinks one beer, they usually drink more to get a buzz and that is wrong. Sometimes they even turn into alcoholics." Others in this group quoted Proverbs 20:1 which states, "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." Most felt that all alcohol consumption was wrong, "There just isn't any good reason to drink alcohol, and it is not like it tastes good."
Eleven percent stated that they were unsure about whether or not beer, in particular, was wrong, "I don't know because the Bible only talks about drunkenness with wine and strong drink, not about having only one beer." Some in this group were more concerned with the motivation for drinking beer rather than the amount consumed, "If you are drinking because you want to dull some area of your life then it is wrong because you are supposed to turn to God when you are in need." The remaining pollers in this group were unsure because they knew about the health benefits associated with alcohol, "I have hard that wine and other alcohol, in moderation, can relieve some abdominal pain like ulcers. Some people are drinking for medicinal purposes."
