Even Christians Can Suffer With Depression
ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Have you suffered from depression?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, stated, "Falling into a depression can happen when Christians are viewing their lives from a different perspective than God."
Out of 1,000 Christians surveyed, 79% confided that they had suffered from depression at some point in their lives. One poller described the experience as, "After my marriage fell apart and I was divorced. Unfortunately, depression set in. I was helped through the Holy Spirit and counseling. I was okay for awhile until two years later life events took me through more challenges. I again sought counseling and leaning on the Lord." Others in this category seemed to correlate depression with independence from the Lord, "Because I spent too much time on self and not enough time with the Lord, made wrong choices and reaped what I sowed all my own fault." Another survey taker described their depression as, "It seemed like life was more so a punishment than a blessing."
Thirteen percent of those surveyed claimed that they had not suffered from a bout of depression in their lives. The most common response in this category alluded to, "Depression can be a form of sin apart from mental illness. Trust, faith and assurance are promises that we as Christians can claim if we allow God to work." Another poll taker responded, "Look at the lilies of the field and the birds of the air; they do not worry about food or clothing, if our Lord cares for them, how much more will He care for you." Most in this category believed that as long as a Christian had a good relationship with the Lord, then they would not suffer with depression, "Staying in God's Word will relieve you from symptoms."
Eight percent were unsure about whether or not they had ever experienced depression, "Depression is a word used too loosely today. I am not sure if I have or not." Another in this group stated, "I know I have been sad and down, but I'm not sure if it was depression." Still, another said, "it depends on the situation."
To help educate Christians on the topic of depression, ChristiaNet has just released a free Depression Quiz. Using the latest interactive technology, one can test their Biblical knowledge on issues facing the Christian community.
