Christians Divided On The Easter Bunny
ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Should Christians participate in the Easter Bunny?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, stated, "Explaining the real meaning of holidays to children is important."
Out of 1,300 people surveyed, 46% did not believe that Christians should include the Easter Bunny in their celebrations. One survey taker said, "The Easter Bunny did not die for my sins or the sins of the world; only Jesus Christ, his blood and his Holy power." Some people spoke of the Pagan influence on the holiday as well, "The Easter Bunny is a Pagan belief and has no place in Christianity." Another poller stated their reason as, "If you tell your children that there is an Easter Bunny and a Santa Claus, then they find out that they are not real and you attempt to tell them about Jesus, and they can't see Him either, they won't believe He exists."
Thirty-nine percent of those surveyed thought it was okay for Christians to include the Easter Bunny, "We have freedom in Christ Jesus, so it doesn't matter." Another poller in agreement stated, "A parent is responsible to share with the child the reason for the holiday and the sacrifice Jesus made, but I see no reason for our kids not to enjoy coloring and hunting for eggs." Some even thought that the typical modern Easter traditions could be used to explain the resurrection, "I think it's fine because it is a good time for the kids and you can even teach them about Christ rising using the eggs and jelly beans."
Fifteen percent of poll takers were unsure if Easter should include the Bunny, "Each Christian has his or her own beliefs, they have to decide for themselves." Another unsure participant said, "I don't think so because I think that it detracts from the real message of Easter. But it is pretty harmless fun for small children." Still, one survey taker in this category responded, "Jesus would want people to have fun on the holiday. I may not talk about a magical bunny, but there are reasons a parent can give for the eggs and new life."
