Must Christians Follow The Ten Commandments?
ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Must Christians follow the Ten Commandments?" Bill Cooper, president of ChristiaNet said "An overwhelming majority of pollers believe that Christians must follow the Ten Commandments."
With nearly 1,200 Christians responding to the survey, a whopping 88% said that they believe that Christians must follow the Ten Commandments. One responder cited John 14:15: "If you love Me, keep My commandments...Enough said! Disobedience of His commandments is a big part of what has caused our nation's problems." Another Christian offered a succinct response: "A commandment is not a request." Several responders tackled the concept of the New Covenant. "Although the New Covenant freed us from Moses' Law, these are still the basic right from wrong rules that separate us from evil." "I believe a Christian must keep these commandments," said one poller, adding, "Not as a means of his/her salivation that replaces the price Jesus Christ paid for our sin on the cross, but as a moral code..."
Nine percent of Christians surveyed believe Christians do not need to follow the Ten Commandments. "I believe most Christian try to follow the Ten Commandments, but like most human beings we are not super human and fail over the most minor things, said one responder," adding, "...For example 'Thou shall not steal.' when we take a pen from work...or a bar of soap from a hotel, is that not stealing?..." "Christians are no longer under this law," surmised one responder. "The law was given for the lawless," yet another Christian reasoned. This responder went on to say that: "...No man is justified by the law in the sight of God."
Three percent of Christians said that they were unsure about whether or not Christians were required to follow the Ten Commandments. "Because we don't live by the law but by grace," explained one responder. "The Bible tells us works cannot save us," said another responder, adding, "Only faith and the acceptance of Jesus will."
