Are Body Piercings Sinful?, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Are body piercings sinful?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, responds, "Anything that does not glorify God should be avoided."

Out of 1,100 Christians surveyed, 50% of them felt that body piercings were sinful. The majority of respondents felt that their bodies are the Temple of the God and they should not defile it in any way. To support their position, many quoted from the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy;" While others paraphrased the Old Testament by saying, "The Bible tells us not to make any marks, tattoos, cuts, piercings, etc." Another believed that body piercing does not glorify God and identifies the person with paganism. However, many of those who found body piercings sinful made an exception for women to pierce their ears.

Twenty-seven percent of survey takers took a negative stance when it comes to the sinfulness of body piercing. Most in this group felt that even thou body piercings were not sinful, Christians should not pierce their bodies because of health reasons or a bad witness quoting the Apostle Paul, "All things are permissible, but not all things are profitable." One comment included, "Tongue piercings are actually leading to heart attacks in young adults." Some in support of body piercing equated it to wearing makeup or jewelry, "Is wearing makeup or jewelry to Church sinful?"

The remaining twenty-three percent of poll takers were unsure about whether or not body piercings were sinful. The biggest question faced by this group was the issue of women wearing earrings. One unsure respondent commented, "I think ear piercing is okay, but any other piercings I'd rate as sinful." Another poll taker said, "I feel earrings are alright for women, but for men I consider that a sin." Many believed that the motivation is what makes the body piercing sinful or not. "I don't see any difference from other cosmetic procedures -- tattoos, plastic surgeries, etc. It all depends on the motivation, and only our Lord knows that."
