Will The World End In 2012?
ChristiaNet.com, a large Christian portal with eight million monthly page loads, recently asked, "Will the world end in 2012?" President of ChristiaNet, Bill Cooper, said, "Ninety-four percent of Christians believe that it is not for us to know the times or the seasons the Father has ordained."
With nearly 2,300 Christians responding to the survey, 61% said that there was no way the world would end in 2012. Most participants in this group felt date setting was wrong because only God knows when the world will end. "No man knows the day or the hour" said one Christian. Another explained, "Predicted dates such as 1988, 2000 and 2007 have past and the world still exists." Believers in the popular eschatology of today say the world has at least 1,007 years before destruction. One responder went on to explain that "The earth must experience 7 years of tribulation and then 1,000 years of Christ's reign on earth before the end."
Thirty-three percent of Christians surveyed were unsure. The vast majority in this group quoted from Matthew 24:36 stating, "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." Another Christian said, "Jesus told us He would come like a thief in the night, so we need to always be ready!" Another stated, "Signs point to the end, but it could happen tomorrow, 100 years from now or in 2012."
Six percent of Christians felt the year 2012 could definitely be the end of all existence. Interestingly, this group was the most diverse with three major themes influencing their beliefs: prophecy being fulfilled daily, natural disasters on the rise and an increasing of sin against God. One responder said, "Things are happening just like the Bible said it would in the end. Prophecy seems to be unfolding at a rapid rate." Others felt that natural disasters such as storms, pole shifting, giant meteors or Planet X could end life on earth in 2012. While many other Christians believe that God could not allow sin to continue to rise much longer. As one Believer simply stated, "How much longer can He stand us living like we do!"
